Banff Travel Tips and Tricks

1. Sunrise stroll

Banff is one of the most beautiful towns we’ve ever been too, but with this beauty comes a lot of tourists. And I mean bus loads of people travelling into the town for a night or two. If you’re not travelling during the off season and are planning to visit Banff during the summer months, I would recommend waking up with the birds and getting an early start to your day. It’s quieter and you can sneak in those peaceful pictures. If not, you’re going to be herded down the sidewalks with hundreds of other tourists which is frankly, my nightmare. The early bird gets the worm, so put on your walking shoes, grab a coffee, and explore the town before it wakes.

2. Banff Gondola

Take the gondola up to Banff’s Sulpher Mountain and explore the jaw dropping beauty of the summit. There’s an interactive interpretive centre where you can discover the alpine eco systems as well as a 360 degree boardwalk where you can take in all the glorious mountain views. Theres also a Sky Bistro where you can indulge in world class dining above the clouds.

3. Lake Louise and Moraine Lake

If you’re in Banff, you have to visit Lake Louise and Moraine Lake too! When we went in July 2017, you could drive up to both lakes and park, and it was extremely busy. Now, to protect the area from over tourism, you have to pay for a shuttle to take you to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. It’s worth it to explore both lakes if you have the opportunity! Lake Louise is a stunning emerald colour while Moraine Lake is the bluest saphhire colour I’ve ever seen.

4. Bow Valley Parkway

Visit Bow Valley Parkway on your way between Lake Louise and Banff. It’s a beautiful spot for a picnic and a trail walk. Although we kept our visit short and sweet, you can bring your bike or lace up your hiking shoes and go off exploring the many different trails throughout the park.

Where to Stay?

Affordable Accommodations

1. We’ve stayed at both the Fox Hotel and Suites as well as the Peaks Hotel and Suites. I preferred the Peaks Hotel because it’s off the main busy road and it’s newer with lots of cozy character.

Splurge Accommodations

1. Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel – we haven’t stayed here, but it’s on our bucket list!

2. Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise – we would love to stay here in the future!
